Show for Baby Dee, New York City, Jan 2005

Baby Dee is one of the most amazing artists I know. A West Village legend. We brought her back to NYC to celebrate her amazing song-writing by having many of my favorite CHARM artists play her songs!

"Savage Nursery" by Erin Orr, toured East Coast in 2004

Commissioned by HERE's Dream Music Puppetry Program and funded by a grant from The Jim Henson Foundation, "The Savage Nursery" explores how identity is shaped and revealed by hunger, cruelty, loneliness, and resilience in the face of lost love. It is the mysterious fairy tale of a bird-woman raising her young fledgling birds, her lone defiant brattling, and the pack of feral children who collect at the foot of her nursery.

"The most compelling part of the play is the music, composed and performed by Sxip Shirey and Rima Fand. They use an amazing array of instruments and sound effects throughout the performance, including a jaw harp, reverse music boxes, and even a marble in a glass bowl. If viewed as an experiment in avant-garde musical performance, this play is certainly a smashing success" (Jesse Scaccia, Off-Off Online).

Daredevil Opera Company: "Rocket's and Roxie's Stunt Show," Australia, 2004

Rocket Johnny and his crew foil death at every turn with cunning stunts served decidedly tongue in cheek. Tom Comet's taste for juggling explosives is getting out of hand, but the most difficult stunt of all is keeping Roxanne Rolls, the accident-prone assistant, from going up in smoke! Incendiary score by the Danger Be Damned Orchestra, this pyrorockstuntclown show was a sold-out, smash hit at the 2002 Edinburgh Fringe. It's the most thrilling experience you can have without a helmet.

"Hotter than Hell... Set to a deranged musical backdrop of circus standards that sounds as if Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails fame produced them" (Paul Rhodes, The Scotsman)

Anti-Gravity: "Crash Test Dummies," New York, NY, 2001

A physical comedy about reject Crash Test Dummies forced to test household products. The setup is a platform for some of the world's most beautiful physical artistry by Anti-Gravity's signature cast of top athletes and dancers.

The original score by Sxip Shirey and Paul Weir features "a smorgasboard of sound effects that raid the ear with whistles, sirens, thuds, the sizzle of electric short circuits, the revving of engines and the hiss of steam" (Lawrence Van Gelder, The New York Times). While the dummies jump and crash into walls and floors, the two composers act as foley artists (disguised as lab technicians), who, seemingly oblivious to the mayhem around them, create live sound effects that give the show an almost cartoon-like feel.

"The outrageously severe 'product tests' are accompanied by original, live music by Sxip Shirey and Paul Weir that brilliantly enhances every nuance of the amazingly athletic choreography" (Lisa Jo Sagolla, BackStage).
